1. Keep a record of everything that you eat and drink. Just write down what you had and the quantity. There is no need to estimate calories. Soon you will being more aware of what you are eating which helps you to plan for healthy meals and snacks.
2. Cut your intake of pure and added fats by half, which means half the usual amount of mayonnaise or sauce on your salad; half as much butter or spread on your bread, toast and muffins; and half the oil in the frypan from now on. Reduce items containing sugar like chocolate, ice cream, desserts, cake, pastries, cookies, to three times per week.
3. Add low fat protein for most meals: fish, chicken, beans, cottage cheese, or low fat yogurt. Have eggs, nuts and red meat occasionally but not every day. Plan at least one lunch and dinner weekly without cheese or meat. Create your meals around whole grains, vegetables and beans to reduce fat and increase fiber.
4. If you are currently drinking whole milk, reduce to 2% fat. Reduce to 1%. Choose low fat cheese and yogurt. Make sure that the yogurt you buy does not contain sugar. Have at least two servings of fruit every day, be it for dessert or snacks. Get fruit that is in season. Include at least two servings of vegetables at lunch and dinner.
5. Cut down on sodas, juices, milky drinks or alcohol. Drink water instead. Avoid diet soda - the sweet taste encourages the crave for sugar. Hot water with a slice of lemon can be very refreshing in the morning.
6. Eat slowly. The body is slow to register when you are full and you will tend to overeat when you race through your meals.
7. Try grated carrot for snack. You will find that a grated carrot is much more filling than a whole carrot.
8. Increase your fiber intake, choose food that you can chew. The act of chewing will make you feel more satisfied too. Eat fruit instead of drinking juice. If you have soup, make sure it is chunky. Use whole grains wherever possible. The fiber will give you a fuller feeling and also help your digestion.
9. Plan your meals and snacks. Plan your shopping too. Make a list of what you need and stick to it. Do not just grab something when you are feeling hungry, it is highly possible that you will choose high calorie food.
10. Switch off the TV while you eat. That includes snacks as well as meals. Studies show that we eat larger portions in front of the TV, probably because we are much less aware of what we are eating. When you eat, only eat if you want to lose your weight fast.
